Got 10K dreams but the running stamina of a chinstrap penguin? I hear you.
I’ve got running fantasies of my own, but my running reality is more like…walking…to the ice cream shop…
Luckily we live in world where just about anything is possible. Even running a 10K. Even if we self-describe as non-runners or runner wannabes.
The trick to making that 10K dream a real thing? Training.
It just so happens that sheJAMs, a women-only training group based in greater Portland, is launching a new five-month 10K training program leading up to the Power of SHE 10K in October (the race, put on by sheJAMs, takes place in Portland on Oct. 11 and is also new this year).
The training starts next week (no time like the present, amiright?).

sheJAMs’ 10K Run Program runs from May 7 to Oct 8 and includes weekly runs in Portland on Thursday nights from 6-7 p.m., plus informal Sunday morning runs and a training program to do on your own during the week. You’ll also get a one-year sheJAMs membership, T-shirt and plenty of runner camaraderie from other Run Program participants. And by October 11, coaches Robin Ray and Coreen Lauren will get you from non-runner to 10K-ready.
It’s open to all levels – participants will be split into two groups (run/walk and run) depending on their running level. Women looking to run their first 10K – or first race ever, for that matter – are encouraged to sign up, as well as experienced runners looking to improve their speed and stamina. You’ll run hills, do track work and a bunch of other fun running stuff. And you’ll watch yourself improve week to week.
The program costs $150 (unless you’re already a sheJAMs member, in which case it’s $100). The group will meet at the Park & Ride on Marginal Way in Portland.
