It’s all about throwing stones and sweeping hard during the Learn to Curl workshops with Pine Tree Curling Club in Portland! On March 25, 40 or so beginner curlers took to the ice at William B. Troubh Ice Arena to learn the curling basics (it looks easy on TV, but mastering the form takes lots of practice).
Most of us had trouble throwing the stone more than 10 feet the first few tries, but we ended up playing short games, throwing the stones all the way down the sheet (even if we still fell over sometimes during our throws. Balance is hard).
The workshops continue for the next few Saturdays (4:30-7:30 p.m. April 1, 8, and 15), but they’ve already filled up. That said, sometimes people don’t show up the day of the workshop, so if you’re dying to give it a try, it’s worth showing up to see if you can squeeze in.
Or consider signing up for the spring league, which starts in May.
